War With Iran a Sure Thing?
On December 19, 2011 CBS news aired a clip of Scott Pelley interviewing  Secretary of Defense Panetta where Panetta said that "Iran needs a year or less to assemble a nuclear weapon". In the same interview Panetta said "The United States will take whatever steps necessary to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons."
Israel has made it very clear that they will take military action against Iran to prevent them from developing a nuclear weapon and Panetta indicated that the U.S. would support Israel. While some experts do not believe that Iran is anywhere close to developing a nuclear weapon, it is pretty much inevitable that the war mongers in the U.S. and Israel will conclude in the near future that Iran is about to succeed in the production of a nuclear weapon. Remember the conclusion that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction when he didn't. Déjà vu all over again.
The war mongers may believe that they can quickly destroy Iran's nuclear capability and that will be the end of it. These are the same people that thought they could prance into Iraq and the people would revolt against Saddam and it would be an easy win. After EIGHT years of war in Iraq, and over 4,000 troops dead, the troops are out of Iraq but it is a dubious victory. Iraq is left in a mess with a virtual dictator that is little better than Saddam. Instead of creating a wonderful democracy in Iraq they are left with a corrupt government that appears to be allied with Iran. The world is not a safer place after a terrible and unnecessary war!
The war mongers do not seem to appreciate, or don't care, that Iran has one of the largest militaries in the world - estimated at nearly four million, about a million more than the U.S. They may not be equipped as well as the U.S. but their capability is not to be taken lightly. Most citizens in Iran are pro western but if it comes to an attack on their country almost all will likely support the government. Iraq will not just say "we are sorry" if the U.S. and Israel destroy their nuclear capability. Iran will retaliate in a fierce way.
Retaliation by Iran would not be tit for tat. I lived in Iran and have a little understanding of the Iranian mentality. An attack would be a Pearl Harbor in reverse. We would be the attacker and they would be the avenger, and avenge they would! I have never been a believer in Armageddon but if we attack Iran there will be an Armageddon like result.
It does not need to happen! The U.S. has been annoying and interfering with Iran ever since being thrown out after the fall of the Shah. We got thrown out of Vietnam but then we left them alone. Vietnam rebuilt and prospered and are now good friends with the U.S. We could have, and should have, done the same thing with Iran. The great majority of Iranians would love for their government to be on good terms with the U.S. and it could have been that way.
While the western world's relationship with Iran is now terrible, trying to repair those relations will probably work and is certainly better than going to war with them. Regardless of what Panetta said, Iran is probably no were near close to building a nuke and if we started peace overtures they would have no reason to pursue a bomb building program. If we were friends with Iran it would be not a problem even if they have the bomb, or developed one. It would be better if no one had nuclear weapons but Russia, China, India, and Pakistan have them and the world is still turning.
In addition to making friends with Iran, we need to force Israel to resolve the Palestinian conflict - yes we could force them to do that. Iran hates Israel and that is the main reason they want the bomb. Click here to read my article about the Israel problem.

There is no better time than now to "Make peace, not war".
